Ask any business owner, and he or she will tell you that running a business is difficult. It’s common for many business owners to associate their good and bad days with the performance of their company. In difficult times, stress can have a negative impact on a business owner’s mental health, adding to an already heavy load. Instead of waiting for a panic attack, we encourage business owners to use this mental health checklist to keep stress at bay.

Work-Life Balance

When a company is underperforming, the first thing any business owner thinks of is working longer hours. Working harder is an important step toward growing your business, but it is only half the battle. If you’re already pushing yourself to the limit, the last thing you need on top of your hectic workload is a bout of burnout, which can easily occur if you’re not mindful of balancing your work with other priorities. In stressful situations, tunnel vision can take over and limit your motivation to achieving a single goal, which has its own set of benefits and drawbacks. While other priorities take a back seat, critical issues such as health can fall through the cracks and suffer.

To avoid burnout, business owners must maintain a steady work pace while maintaining a work-life balance. It is essential for your mental health checklist and reminds you that your life exists outside of the workplace and your business. Investing in different areas of your life will relieve some of the pressure while also allowing you to maintain your energy to continue your work.

Cultivating Mindfulness

As the person in charge of your company, you have an endless to-do list that keeps you busy. If you’re starting to feel like your life is blurring because you’re living by your to-do list, you might want to consider slowing down. Exercise is one activity that has been shown to significantly improve both mental and physical health. Numerous studies have repeatedly shown that exercise reduces your risk of diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, and others. Exercise can boost your energy and mood, help you develop your brain, improve your concentration, promote better sleep, improve your memory and thinking skills, and help you lose weight. Doctors recommend at least 150 minutes of aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise per week.

Hobbies and Other Interests

Finding a hobby or developing other interests outside of work can help you reduce stress, increase happiness, and think creatively. Painting, sports, and woodworking can all be added to your mental health checklist. Investing in a hobby can help you improve your overall health. Art and creative hobbies have been shown in studies to improve mental health, while physical recreation can help with overall health and isolation. Participating in a hobby or group activity, such as a sports team, can reduce depression and anxiety while increasing positive moods.

Even if you have a busy work schedule, make it a priority to find a hobby that allows you to decompress and add more enjoyment to your life.

Eating Well

When it comes to maintaining good physical health, exercise is only one half of the equation. A healthy diet is just as important and is the foundation of your overall health. Good eating habits, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, can help you maintain a healthy weight, lower your risk of chronic diseases such as obesity, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes, and protect you from future health problems. A healthy diet includes plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, low sodium, sugar, and saturated fats.

Ask for Help

The key to mental health success, and the most important item on your mental health checklist, is asking for help. Whether it’s delegating more tasks to others, hiring new employees, joining a support group, or looking to other resources, asking for help will lighten your load.

Take this into consideration. The business ventures may or may not fail. Entrepreneurs, on the other hand, should never fail. They must get back up after every fall.
